Rebound Rumble is the challenge for the 2012 FIRST Robotics Competition. This game is based on basketball, but ends in robots attempting to balance on a bridge. It is played on a 27×54 foot carpet area with two alliances made up of three teams trying to score baskets opposite their driver stations. Using cameras, robots can track a retro-reflective Vision Target which is mounted behind each hoop. The top hoop is worth three points, the second row of hoops are worth two points, and the bottom hoop is worth one point. A barrier splits the field into two equal halves and contains three bridges.  There is one bridge for each of the alliances and one for  coopertition, meaning both alliances can use the bridge.

During Hybrid mode one robot on each alliance is allowed to use a Microsoft Kinect. This allows the drivers to control their robot with a person’s movement. Each team has two Inbounders that may throw the basketballs back onto the court. During the last 20 seconds of the the game two robots from each alliance can balance on their bridge. The remaining robot may balance on the coopertition bridge with a robot from the opposing alliance to earn coopertition points; this part of the game is optional.
